5 Ways To Practice Self-Love

So what is self love?

I’m sure you’ve heard about self love over and over. Truth is, everyone has a different way to loving themselves. No one should tell you how you can love yourself. Only you can do that.

My personal slogan “Be kind to you” has helped me learn to love myself intentionally. The same way you care about others, you check on them, support, appreciate and celebrate them, you should do the same for yourself.  Surprisingly, it’s harder than it sounds.

Putting yourself first should be your priority which includes mental, physical and emotional sanity. When faced with difficult life struggles, or confronting personal mistakes, failures, and inadequacies, self-love respond with kindness rather than harsh self-judgment, recognizing that imperfection is part of the shared human experience.

Find your happy place.

Self love is all about connecting with you. Try and find a peaceful place to recollect your thoughts and embrace the power of now. Let it be your safe haven where you leave your worries at bay and just in silence. You can choose to meditate, do yoga, pray or whatever works for you. Just remember you’re finding your inner peace.

Stop comparing yourself to others.

We have all done it at some point. Your younger sibling got engaged before you get a stable relationship, or a new car, better job and flashy friends on social media. Of course you wonder why good things are happening to everybody else except you. Stop that now! For whatever reason or excuse you’re trying to feel sorry for yourself, it’s just killing you slowly. Instead, start building your confidence, appreciate the small blessings you have every day. You will start seeing value in the person staring back at you in the mirror

Do something you're good at.

If this isn’t the ultimate self-esteem booster, I don’t know what is! Self-esteem and self-love often go hand in hand, and participating in a hobby you're good at will not only boost your endorphins, but will bring out the best version of you. If you love to cook, then cook! If you love to run, then grab those sneakers, head outside and run for your life. Reinvent yourself and focus only on your strengths as you improve on your weaknesses.

Forgive yourself for your past mistakes

If there is something we all have in common is emotional baggage. Especially the ‘what if’ question messes with your head every single time. If you hurt yourself through addictive behavior, avoidance, ruining relationships, or otherwise behaving unwisely, make a coping plan for the next time you are in a similar situation so that you can begin to act differently. Forgive yourself and accept human is to error.

Be your own cheerleader

Encourage yourself to be the best version of yourself. Acknowledge yourself for trying even if you weren’t successful. You may tell yourself to focus on the positive aspects of what you did as well as the negative ones, or that behavior change is a process, and you need to keep trying. Buy yourself some customized shirts with positive words, or charming beaded bracelet to remind you that you are awesome.

Self is indeed a personal journey but surround yourself with people who care for you and create a healthy environment. You only live once but you should strive to be happy!
